How to Recover Your Secret

Gather all your RIP cards, open the app, and follow these steps. The process takes under two minutes.

💡

How many cards do you need? It depends on how the cards were originally set up. Some setups require every card; others only need a minimum — for example any 2 out of 3. Don't worry about figuring this out in advance — the app shows your progress as you scan and tells you exactly when it has enough.

📱

Open the App

Launch RIP Card from your app drawer (Android) or home screen (iPhone). The app works fully offline — no internet connection is needed to recover your secret.

🔄

Select Recover

On the main screen tap Recover Secret. The app enters collection mode and waits for you to present your RIP cards one by one.

📶

Scan Each Card

Hold each RIP card to your phone's NFC reader and wait for the confirmation beep or vibration. The app counts collected cards and shows you how many are still needed.

🤖 Android
Hold the card flat against the back of your phone near the top where the NFC chip sits.
🍎 iPhone
Tap each card to the top edge of your iPhone. iOS automatically opens the app with the card's data — no button press needed.
🔁

Repeat for All Cards

Scan each of your remaining RIP cards the same way. The progress bar fills as each card is accepted. Duplicate or already-seen cards are ignored automatically.

The app remembers cards between taps — you don't need to scan all at once.
🔒

Enter Password (if set)

If your cards were created with a password, a password field appears once enough cards have been collected. Type the password exactly as you set it — it is case-sensitive.

No password on your cards? This step is skipped automatically.
🔑

Your Secret is Revealed

The app puts the pieces back together and shows you your full seed phrase or private key. Copy it into your wallet app to restore access to your funds.

Close the app after recovery — the secret is never stored on device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need all my cards to recover the secret?

It depends on how the cards were originally set up. Some setups require every single card — losing even one makes recovery impossible. Others only need a minimum number, for example any 2 out of 3 cards, so one can be missing and recovery still works. If you're not sure which applies to you, scan all the cards you have — the app will tell you when it has collected enough.

One of my cards is lost or damaged. Can I still recover?

It depends on your setup. If your cards were created to need every single card, then a missing or damaged one makes recovery impossible. If they were set up with a safety margin — for example, any 2 out of 3 cards are enough — then losing one card is fine and you can still recover. Scan the cards you have and the app will tell you whether it has enough or if more are needed.

I forgot my password. What now?

The password is not stored anywhere — not on the cards, not on any server. It exists only in your memory. Without it, even having all the cards is not enough to recover the secret. If you have lost your password and have no other way into your wallet, the funds are inaccessible. This is why we recommend choosing a password you will not forget, or keeping a written copy stored separately and securely away from the cards.

Can I use cards written on Android to recover on iPhone, and vice versa?

Yes. The RIP Card protocol is identical on both platforms. Cards written on Android can be read on iPhone and the other way around.

Why does my iPhone open Safari instead of the app when I tap a card?

iOS reads NFC cards as URLs and opens them in Safari. If the RIP Card web app is installed on your home screen, it will intercept the link automatically. Make sure you opened the PWA at least once from the home screen icon before tapping a card. If Safari opens instead, just tap the link and the app will load and register the card.

Is the recovery process safe? Does it send my secret anywhere?

Completely safe. Every cryptographic operation happens entirely on your device — your secret never leaves your phone at any point. The app does not connect to the internet during recovery, does not send anything anywhere, and does not store the secret after you close it. The source code is fully open and publicly available, so you never have to take our word for it — anyone can read exactly what the app does.

I installed the APK on Android but it says "Parse error".

This usually means the APK download was incomplete or the file was corrupted. Delete the file, re-download it from this page, and try installing again. Also make sure your Android version is 8.0 (Oreo) or newer.

Can I write new cards from the app too?

Yes. The app supports both writing and recovering. On Android, NFC write is built in. On iPhone, writing uses the free iOS Shortcuts app — the first time you write cards, the app walks you through a one-time setup that takes about a minute.
